Yes! Another Mike Rowe fan 🙂 He gave a TED talk in Silicon Valley a while ago that’s really good; check it out on YouTube.

I don’t think following your passion makes your a hypocrite; Mike followed his until he realized it wasn’t going to make him successful. What makes both of you wise is that you changed course to follow a more lucrative opportunity. No need to abandon passion altogether, just make it your hobby instead of your job.

I freaking love Mike Rowe. I hate the DWYL brigade.

Which then makes me kind of a hypocrite. I have followed the passion route, and then changed tack to earn more but without sacrificing too much enjoyment.

I completely agree with Mike, you need to earn a good amount to live (if you can actually do that with your passion, fantastic), otherwise, just do it in your spare time. That’s what the blog is for us, a passionate hobby.

Passion is a slippery slope. Of course everyone wants to get paid to do something they are passionate about, but unfortunately that’s just not reality. Or maybe worse, as you found out, sometimes your passion can turn into a pain.

I can’t decide if I love that quote, or if it’s depressing 🙂

Great advice. My passions won’t pay any money so I have tried to maximize my skillset with my career choices. You do have to somewhat enjoy the job you have to do it long-term, but that is different than passion (in my book).

I’ve watched the video and completely agree with Mike Rowe. I tried to follow my passion a few years ago, and it honestly turned my passion into work, meaning I no longer loved it like before.

My husband works a job that pays the bills and sometimes provides him with a good challenge, but he pursues his passions outside of work. I think that’s a great thing.

Btw, I LOVE that quote from Jenkin Lloyd Jones!
