Thankfully I have never had to face some of the things like the fear of collection agency calls or revolving balance in cards.

The good bit is that all these signs are reversible. Once recognised, it’s about educating oneself and working on it.

I think you saved the most important for last. Having a plan – of any kind, really – is so empowering. It makes executing on your great suggestions throughout this writeup very easy and “organic” to your life – so they’re more likely to become habits. Nice stuff!

Whether you use a spreadsheet or a tool like Geltbox Money  — you have to get everything out in front of you so you can make smarter decisions. Once you do that, then implementing your disciplined savings strategy becomes critical

Yea. We are trying the No Spend Month in February for ourselves to make up for an expensive January. But, I do think “No Waste Month” sounds more inviting because you try to do better with the spending you already have during the month.

At my old job, part of my responsibility was to dispatch crews when we needed to run an extra shift that was filled from our list of substitutes. One of our charges was to only call the crew if it helped the operation. If it could wait until the next day and just work the regular people over, it saved the expense of giving two people a day’s wage to do two hours of work. Plus having two less people to fill the normal sick & vacation vacancies.

That’s a long analogy, but that’s the first thought that popped into my head when I read your comment. Senior management & accounting would be smiling at me right now (maybe).

Eventually the piper must be paid. I’m not a big fan of the No Spend Months, but I was talking to @amandacentsiblyrich:disqus about doing a “No Waste Month”. Maybe those that *can’t* do a no spend would be able to save a bit via a no waste month. Whaddaya think @moneybuffalo:disqus?

Thus next month becomes the No Spend Month, then the next, until the can is no longer able to get kicked down the road any further.

PMI also stinks as well. It was eye-opening to see just how many hands were involved with our closing fees & we didn’t even have PMI.

You’re a punny guy, @financialibre:disqus. Without a plan, you’re just floundering. We should always have our sights set on something!

I’m sure we could double this last rather quickly if we really wanted to. Your #11 is is pretty solid indicator that you’re in trouble though. If things are bad enough that you’re already burring your head in the sand, then you’ve got problems. The way to overcome it: Pull your head out. Acknowledge the problem, assess the damage, create a plan.

If I were to add an 11 it would say “you’re in denial about anything stated in 1 to 10”. In my world, numbers 4, 7 and 10 would keep me from sleeping at night! Nice infographic!

Without a plan you’re just treading water (at best). Gotta have that road map! Thanks @missmazuma:disqus
