Ways to Make More Money

This isn’t a list of side hustles or jobs that you can do to make more money. This is meant to be an ongoing list of things you can do that will help you improve yourself in ways that will lead to more money. So if you’re looking for a second job, then check out a job board. But iff you’re looking for some no nonsense ways ways to make more money by improving yourself, then keep reading!

Let’s get started.

Use Your Time Wisely.

Spending hours per day playing Fortnight won’t help you get better at anything besides Fortnight. Instead, spend some of that time improving another aspect of your life like your mind, body, writing skills, etc. If you’ve got a “Fortnight” in your life, recognized it for what it is and use that time instead to better yourself in some way.

Work Smart.

Life is tough and one way or another you’re going to have to work hard. If you’re young, you can pick a profession that pays well, or you can pick one that doesn’t. If you’re going to pick a job that doesn’t pay well, at least make sure it’s something that you’re passionate about and not something that you were forced into because of a lack of options. Choose your occupation wisely.

Adjust.

Don’t get set in your ways.  Your ways are flawed, you just might not recognize it yet.  When you do, don’t be afraid to try something new.  Remaining set in your ways is admitting that you aren’t willing to learn.

Always be learning.

This can be simple, or big. But always be learning. Start with something that you’re interested in, or with something you need.  Learning is growth.

Find a Mentor.

Wherever you spend the majority of your time, whether that’s at work or school, seek out a mentor there.  You can’t, and don’t, know it all. Find someone that can help you know and understand more.

Be a Mentor.

Nothing sharpens your knowledge on a subject better than teaching it. Improve your own strengths by sharing them with others as a mentor.

Differentiate Yourself From Your Peers.

Why would an employer pay you more money for being just like everyone else?  If you want more, you have to offer something different.  Find out what’s lacking in your company, organization or team and set out to fill that gap by learning a new skill.  Be different, not the same.

Go Above and Beyond.

Why would an employer pay you more money for doing your job the way it’s supposed to be done?  That’s called doing the minimum. Just doing your job is what you were hired to do.  And if that’s all you do, you ain’t that special.  If you want more money, go above and beyond.

Be Happy.

Miserable people are a drain on your energy. You’ll attract positive people, and will repel negative ones, with your good attitude. And don’t argue.  Arguing never leads to happiness and accomplishes nothing.

Know Your Worth.

How can you ask for more money at work if you don’t even know what you’re worth?  Job sites like glassdoor.com can help you figure out what people with similar roles, experience and education are making in your area.  This will give you a good idea of where you stand.  If you find out that you’re a top earner, be careful about pushing things too far.  Sometimes it pays to accept the win.

Ask for What You’re Worth.

When investigating your worth in the marketplace, if you determine that you’re underpaid, then speak up.  Nobody is going to voluntarily hand you more money.  If you want it, ask to be paid what you’re worth (and be prepared to show examples of why you’re worth what you claim). Read Getting To Yes.

Become a Goal Setter.

Develop a system of personal habits to help you reach your goals.  Read Atomic Habits.

Pay Yourself First.

Save a portion of every single dollar you earn.  Read The Richest Man in Babylon.

Diversify Your Income.

You are flirting with financial disaster if your only source of income is your full-time job. What happens if and when you lose that job?  In addition to maximizing your income at your full time job, diversify your income with these 7 types of passive income.

Start, then Refine a Side Hustle

Spend some time each day building a side business.  It doesn’t need to be the next crazy tech app. Keep it simple by starting a blog or selling printables on Etsy or t-shirts on Amazon.  The best time to build a side business is when you don’t need one. Building a side hustle while you don’t need it to produce income takes the pressure off and you can make it fun.  Spend a bit of time each day improving that business and eventually you’ll have built something that could help you get through a rainy day.

Love the point about being happy – I think most people are involved in all of this – FIRE, side hussles, etc. ultimately so that they can be happy, but happiness comes from the inside. Master that now, and life becomes easier regardless of what your situation is. 🙂

Also I think you’re spot on about starting a side hustle when you don’t need it – if there’s pressure to make money, you won’t make the best decisions. In that case I think you concentrate on what you know – supplement your income with freelance work for example.
